JBS-Produced Publications in The Soloist, a Movie That Tackles Homelessness and Mental Health Issues
July 21, 2009

Not only have more than 1.1 million copies of the JBS-produced anger management publications been distributed, now they are also on the big screen. The English and Spanish versions of the publications—Anger Management for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Clients: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Manual and Anger Management for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Clients: Participant Workbook—are fittingly used in a scene in The Soloist (www.soloistmovie.com), a movie that tackles homelessness and mental health issues. The manuals are used approximately halfway through the movie in a scene during which a counselor is preparing for a group session and places the manuals on chairs in the counseling room. And yes, we highlighted this free product placement in the proposal we submitted for the Knowledge Application Program (KAP) rebid!

JBS’s KAP, a Joint Venture of JBS and The CDM Group, produced the English manual and workbook in 2002, working with the main author, Patrick M. Reilly, M.D. KAP staff collaborated with Dr. Reilly to revise the manual so that any counselor leading anger management groups can use it without special training. KAP staff designed the layouts and conducted a field review of the manual and participant workbook, obtaining feedback from professionals working in substance abuse treatment programs. In 2006, KAP staff adapted the manual and participant workbook for Spanish-speaking counselors and clients. The manual and workbook have also been translated into Korean.

The therapy manual helps counselors teach anger management techniques in a group setting through a 12-week cognitive–behavioral intervention. The manual describes the anger cycle, conflict resolution, assertiveness skills, and anger control plans. The accompanying participant workbook provides worksheets and homework assignments using the core concepts introduced in the manual.

On average, more than 6,000 copies of the documents are downloaded each month from the KAP Web site. If you’d like to see the documents, you can either go to the movie or visit the KAP Web site.
